Chiropractic and Acupuncture

What is Animal Acupuncture?
Animal Acupuncture is very similar to human acupuncture. It can be defined as the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to produce a healing response*. The healing response is brought on by the stimulation of nerves, increase in blood circulation, relief of muscle spasms and release of hormones such as endorphins and cortisol. Each "point" has a specific action when stimulated which enables us to target healing.
Acupuncture has been used in eastern medicine for many years and research on its uses in animals has been positive.

What is Animal Chiropractic?
The legal/correct terminology is "Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy." (VSMT). VSMT is used to promote a healthy body by manipulation the musculoskeletal and neurologic systems. The ultimate goal of this therapy is to restore a normal range of motion and allow adequate neurologic function of each motor unit.

During a visit for VSMT, Dr. Jacobson will start off with a full assessment of your animal. The assessment will include a detailed history and exam, the will then discuss her findings with you and her treatment plan. In some cases, adjustments may not be recommended and additional therapies/diagnostics may be recommended.

Dr. Melanie Jacobson is certified in Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy and Acupuncture. Appointments for these services can be made with the front desk and can be for horses, cats and dogs.

If you are wondering if acupuncture and veterinary spinal manipulation may help your pet or horse, you can ask any of our veterinarians during regular appointments.
